We want to be in control and manage our unmanagable lives. It’s God’s job, but we want to do it. The problem is, we’re not God. CONTROL is an impossible job being failed at by someone who is not equipped to do it.

We want to control our image because we don’t want others to know what we’re really like. We try to hide our weaknesses and vulnerabilities. We try to hide our sins. After all, if you really get to know me, you probably won’t like me. My pride won’t stand for that.

We try to control other people so they won’t see the truth about us. But, if I have enough control over you, then maybe you won’t reject me even when the truth does come out. We use all kinds of control measures including Guilt, fear, doubt, anger, silence on other people.

We try to control the damage we do to ourselves and to others in our sins, mostly by lying. But when we can’t control damage and pain, we run from it or try to cover it up. There are lots of ways to do that too. Food, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sex, and substitute relationships are some of our favorites.

All this only make things worse. Proverbs 4:12says “There is a way that seems right to man but it ends in death.” That’s because CONTROL is an impossible job being failed at by someone who is not equipped to do it. The truth is that we are all helpless. On our own – life is hopeless.

But there is some good news.

In Romans 7:24-25 Paul wrote ” What a miserable person I am. Who will rescue me from this body that is doomed to die? Thank God! Jesus Christ will rescue me.
